Stories Come Alive

When children can hold the characters and move the story along, reading becomes another opportunity to imagine and participate.

Move the Three Little Pigs characters, recognize familiar faces, and retell events in order. Adult prompts can invite expressive language, guided conversation, and visual and tactile participation.

Try together: “Who comes next, and what happens at this house?”

There’s More to Play Than Meets the Eye.

Guided Play & Learning

Compared with direct instruction, guided play showed advantages for early maths, shape knowledge, and task switching; compared with free play, it showed an advantage for spatial vocabulary. Other outcomes did not show clear differences, and findings varied across studies. This is evidence about guided activities, not a particular toy.

Skene, O’Farrelly, Byrne, Kirby, Stevens & Ramchandani (2022) ↗

Stories, Vocabulary & Language

A systematic review and meta-analyses found positive effects of structured narrative-language interventions on story production and comprehension. Common elements included verbal and visual supports, explicit story structure, and opportunities to tell stories. These findings do not establish that storytelling toys independently improve vocabulary, literacy, or reading confidence.

Pico, Hessling Prahl, Biel, Peterson, Biel, Woods & Contesse (2021) ↗

Pretend Play & Social Interaction

This review examined links between pretend play and development, including social skills, language, and narrative. It found insufficient evidence for strong claims that pretend play itself uniquely causes improvements; child, adult, and environmental factors may help explain associations. Shared pretend scenarios can still offer a setting for conversation and taking turns.

Lillard, Lerner, Hopkins, Dore, Smith & Palmquist (2013) ↗

Hands-On & Tactile Experiences

This peer-reviewed review considers how handling instructional materials may contribute to learning through perception and action, while discussing competing explanations and limits. It provides a rationale for thoughtfully guided hands-on activities, not evidence that stand-alone fidgets treat conditions, improve focus, or provide clinically established sensory regulation. Suitability depends on the child, setting, and activity.
